What is MBA?

The MBA is a two-year postgraduate management degree, usually taken after two to five years of work experience, though many Indian programmes admit fresh graduates. Its value is concentrated at the top of the market: return on investment varies enormously between a top-tier institution and an unranked one, which makes institution selection the single most important decision in this course.

Eligibility

  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline with typically 50% aggregate
  • Valid CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, NMAT or GMAT score
  • Group discussion and personal interview at most institutions
  • Work experience preferred but not mandatory at many programmes

MBA — frequently asked questions

Is an MBA worth it from a non-top-tier institution?

It depends entirely on cost and placement data. A programme charging Rs 15 lakh with an average placement of Rs 5 lakh is a poor financial decision. Ask every institution for its audited placement report, not its highest package, before committing.

Can I do an MBA immediately after graduation?

Yes. Most Indian MBA programmes admit fresh graduates. Programmes that require work experience tend to be executive or one-year formats.

Which MBA specialisation should I choose?

Choose based on the function you want to work in, not on which specialisation sounds strongest. Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR remain the core four; Business Analytics and Product Management are the fastest-growing additions.
